The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) says there is need for more girls to pursue innovative careers in science and technology.

After receiving K7.2 million donation from NICO Life in Malawi’s commercial capital Blantyre, organising chairperson for the 2024 MUST Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEAM) Camp for girls, Dr. Marion Kajombo, thanked NICO Life for their benevolence and the timely donation.

Kajombo, who is also the head Of Department at Malawi University of Science and Technology, said the donation is set to supports the camp scheduled for next month on July12, 2024 at the university in Thyolo.

Dr. Kajombo said: “Lack of financial muscle hinders the fulfilment of ideas at tertiary level hence we commend NICO Life for the support.”

Acting Operating Officer (AOO) for NICO Life, Chimwemwe Kanyenda, said statistics show a big gap on the use of technology between male and females hence supporting the idea by MUST for inclusiveness.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEAM) careers are among the fastest growing and highest paying, yet women are largely underrepresented in these fields, and many girls lack access to STEM opportunities in school.

MUST, a world-class centre of science and technology education, research and entrepreneurship, plans to host about 200 secondary school girls, where they will be mentored on potential careers in science and technology.

The university, which is in Thyolo district and was opened on October 24, 2014, exists to provide a conducive environment for quality education, training, research, entrepreneurship, and outreach to facilitate economic growth in Malawi and beyond.

NICO Life Insurance Company Limited is 51% owned by NICO Holdings Plc and 49% owned by Sanlam Developing Markets (SDM).
