The Malawi Seattle Association (MSA) in the United States of America (USA) led the Malawian community in a heartfelt memorial for the republican fallen Vice President the late Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others who tragically lost their lives in a recent plane crash in an emotionally-filled tribute – Charles Simango reports.
The commemoration, held on Saturday, in honour of Chilima and his entourage, took place at Lake Sammamish Park, was part of the events marking the 60th Independence Day of Malawi, which falls on July 6th.
Dressed in all white, the attendees participated in a memorial ceremony that included poignant moments of prayer and a candle-lighting session to celebrate and honour the memory of the deceased.
The gathering saw a substantial turnout from the Malawian community, reflecting their shared grief and solidarity.
MSA President Wezi Longwe addressed the gathering, emphasizing the profound loss felt by both the families of the victims and the nation as a whole. We have lost a visionary leader in Vice President Chilima.
The event also celebrated and honoured the memory of the lives of former Attorney General and Justice minister Ralph Kasambara and music icon, the legendary Lucius Banda who both died in the month of June.
“The loss of his entourage is a devastating blow not only to their families but to our nation as well,” Longwe said.
Macmillan Dalla, the leader of the organizing committee for the event, also spoke at the ceremony, calling on the community to remain united and support each other as they strive to build better lives for themselves in the diaspora.
“In times like these, our unity is our strength. Let us continue to support each other on our journey,” Dalla urged.
The event was a somber yet unifying occasion, reminding the community of the importance of coming together in times of tragedy.
The candle-lighting ceremony symbolized hope and remembrance, as attendees reflected on the lives and legacies of those who perished.
As the Malawian community in Seattle marked their homeland’s independence, they also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting each other through shared sorrow and celebration, ensuring that the memories of their leaders and compatriots live on.
“We have lost a visionary leader in Vice President Chilima.”
