The afternoon sun beat down on the turf of the Bingu National Stadium, but it was nothing compared to the heat generated by thousands of roaring fans in Lilongwe.

Friday, 9 October 2026, will go down as historic as the Malawi Scorchers, the AFCON finalists, delivered a masterclass in determination and unsurpassed class, defeating the Zimbabwe Mighty Warriors with a 2–0 thumping in the first leg of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers.

From the first whistle, Malawi looked dangerous, driven forward by a midfield that refused to give Zimbabwe breathing room. The breakthrough came midway through the first half.

A clinical build-up found Temwa Chawinga in space, and the star forward made no mistake, blasting a low strike past the Zimbabwean goalkeeper to send the home crowd into a frenzy.

AFCON finalists, Malawi scorched the Zimbabwe Warriors.

“We knew we had to strike early to unsettle them,” Temwa said after the match, wiping sweat from her brow. “Playing at home brings pressure, but the fans gave us wings today. It’s a great start, but the job is only half done.”

Zimbabwe fought back valiantly in the second half, tightening their defense and launching quick counter-attacks that tested Malawi’s backline. However, the Scorchers’ experience proved decisive.

In the 74th minute, captain Tabitha Chawinga intercepted a loose pass, outpaced two defenders, and calmly slotted home Malawi’s second goal of the afternoon, sealing the victory.

“As captain, you always want to lead by example, and scoring that second goal gives us a massive cushion,” Tabitha remarked during the post-match press conference.

Captain fantastic: Tabitha Chawinga.

“Zimbabwe is a tough team, and we expect a fierce battle in the second leg. We are going there to fight just as hard.”

Scorchers coach, Lovemore Fazili said: “I am excited with the result. The girls put up a gallant fight. We are ready for the return.”

On the other side, the Mighty Warriors were left reflecting on missed opportunities but remained defiant about their chances in the return fixture.

“We made two critical errors, and a team with the quality of Malawi will always punish you for that,” the Zimbabwe head coach noted. “But 2–0 is not an impossible mountain to climb. We are going back to Harare to regroup, and we will be ready for Tuesday.”

With a two-goal aggregate advantage, the Scorchers take a massive step toward the next round, where Kenya awaits. The definitive showdown takes place in Zimbabwe on Tuesday, 13 October 2026.

“Zimbabwe is a tough team, and we expect a fierce battle in the second leg. We’re going there to fight hard.”
