NBM Development Bank-funded Rural Development Investment Initiative Trust (RUDEVIT) has begun full-scale production of granulated organic fertiliser, with its plant in Chileka, Blantyre, producing about 3,000 kilogrammes per hour.
The facility, which began full production in July this year, currently operates one eight-hour shift and can produce about 60 bags of fertiliser per hour.
The production milestone was highlighted on Tuesday, when NBM Development Bank Director Alick Sukasuka visited the RUDEVIT facility to appreciate progress made since the Bank financed the establishment of the manufacturing plant in 2022.
RUDEVIT manufactures granulated organic fertiliser using waste materials, turning waste into a productive resource while contributing to Malawi’s local fertiliser supply.
Sukasuka expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the company, noting the developments achieved since NBM Development Bank provided financing for the project.
“The progress at RUDEVIT has demonstrated the importance of supporting productive investments that strengthen local manufacturing and enable enterprises to increase their contribution to the economy,” said Sukasuka.
RUDEVIT Chairperson Hastings Bofomo Nyirenda said the company’s production capacity positions it to contribute to meeting Malawi’s fertiliser requirements through locally produced organic fertiliser.
“The facility can produce about 60 bags per hour and could help increase the availability of locally manufactured fertiliser while reducing reliance on imported products.
“This increased local production also has the potential to support import substitution, create employment and stimulate economic activity.”
“Through this investment, we can contribute towards Malawi’s fertiliser requirements through locally produced organic fertiliser,” added Nyirenda.
Nyirenda said the company currently employs more than 60 people, with the manufacturing operation creating a market for the productive use of waste materials.
