Food insecurity has intensified because of the cumulative impact of prolonged drought and high commodity prices, among other factors, according to a report published by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee earlier this month.

At least 4 million people, representing about 22% of the population, are facing the risk of hunger and the country needs at least 200,000 tons of corn to feed them, it said.

Malawi secured a $45 million emergency food security grant from the World Bank to buy the grain from Zambia, Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha said at the weekend.

The drought brought unspeakable torment to families in Malawi.

The two nations last week signed an agreement for Malawi to purchase the corn at $355 per ton.
