Philantropic business mogul and humanitarian champion Dr. Thompson Mpinganjira has lauded the Lions Club, a charitable organisation that aims at ‘serving a world in need’ for their ceaseless dedication and commitment to improving the lives of Malawians.

A benevolent Dr. Mpinganjira, a man who is always moved by people’s plight and oftentimes serving those in need alongside his family, applauded Lions Club in his remarks during the Multiple District 412 Governors installation dinner in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre.

Mpinganjira, who built a state of the art cancer centre in the country in honour of his late wife Barbara who succumbed to death due to cancer, has commended Lions Club’s concerted efforts in fighting childhood cancer and improving sight as particularly noteworthy.

“What you are doing, as a service to the people of Malawi, is commendable. Your dedication and commitment in fighting childhood cancer and improving people’s sights is great and worthy a heap of praise,” Mpinganjira said.

Mpinganjira applauded the Blantyre Lions Club.

Mpinganjira, however, emphasised the urgent need for further outreach for the childhood cancer and sight initiatives as key areas.

The Mpinganjira’s family is one of the leading charitable families in the country and do various acts of charity and humanitarian work through the Thompson and Barbara Mpinganjira Foundation.

The Thompson and Barbara Mpinganjira Foundation is a charitable organisation that seeks to provide assistance in various areas across Malawi by making charitable investments in the sectors of Youth, Health and Education.

Founded in 2019, the non profit identifies key needs in its focus areas and donates to causes that have been screened and assessed to need assistance in a particular area, as well as having a key focus with business and training growth in mind.

Mpinganjira, who is the founder of FDH Group of companies including the FDH Bank, through his family’s companies, Diplomats Car Hire and Ekhaya Group, donated 10 million Malawian kwacha to the Lions Club District.

This generous donation will support the club’s initiatives to make a positive impact in the community.

Mpinganjira’s recognition of the Lions Club’s efforts is a testament to the club’s commitment to serving others.

The Lions Club is a global organization dedicated to improving the lives of those in need, and Mpinganjira’s support will help them continue their vital work.

The event also saw the election of new leaders for the Lions Club, including Lion Gaefiwe Crunch Kenosi as District Governor for Multiple District 412A (Botswana and Zimbabwe) and Lion Linda Goodman as District Governor Elect for Multiple District 412B – Malawi and Mozambique – for the 2024/25 lionistic year.

The Association of Lions Clubs was established in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, by Melvin Jones, a Chicago business leader.

However, the Lions Club association went international in 1920 when Border Cities Lions Clubs in Windsor, Canada, was established and since then Lions Clubs have been in operation in many countries across the globe.

Lions clubs exist to improve health and wellbeing, strengthen communities, and support those in need through humanitarian service and grants that impact lives globally, and encourage peace and international understanding.

“What you are doing is commendable.”
