One of Africa’s fast-growing financial institution, the prized Bank of the nation, Malawi Stock Exchange listed, National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc brought Africa to life with shades of pomp and grandeur in its banking halls during this year’s Africa Day commemoration with a vibrant and immersive celebration under the theme ‘A Walk-through Africa’.
In a show of appreciation, NBM plc served local delicacies to both staff and customers, turning a typical banking visit into a festive cultural experience.
Adding an educational layer, the floors of the banking halls were decorated with facts about different African countries, where customers learnt about the continent’s history, geography, and contributions to global development.
NBM Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Hiwa said the Bank takes pride in its continent, hence they took a step further to share the experience with their customers.

“Africa has a lot of exciting facts, and these facts spark curiosity and pride in our continent, as NBM plc, we were excited to share them with everyone who walked into our service centres and including our staff members,” said Hiwa.
Hiwa also emphasized on how the event takes the fun initiative into its banking halls and how it ties into the Bank’s broader goals.

“Our current strategic cycle includes continued expansion within the Africa region. For the second year running, our Africa Day celebrations have brought together two core elements of who we are — a Bank proud of its African roots, and one committed to growing across the continent,” explained Hiwa.
NBM plc customer from Mbayani, Catherine Eliya, said the activities organized by the Bank were truly captivating, as there was a unique and enjoyable experience.
“Today, when l came to the Bank, I saw several African decorations and dressing. On top of that, l have eaten African food, tasting the local cuisine, that alone is a top catch and l am excited,” said Eliya.
Another customer, Aubrey Kasten, said seeing the bank’s staff wearing African regalia and prints made him happy.

“I was happy and excited when l came into the Bank and saw bank tellers all dressed in African prints, most of the times when we come they are in suits.
“But, today the experience was different and that shows that the Bank is for Africans and even its employees are our own,” said Kasten.
NBM’s Africa Day commemoration underscores its continued commitment to celebrating African identity and fostering a deeper connection with the people it serves.
Across selected branches, customers and staff were greeted by striking cultural displays and interactive photo booths adorned with iconic African motifs.
The bank’s staff added to the festive atmosphere by donning colourful African prints, representing various countries from across the continent.
Liberation
Africa Day, observed annually on May 25th, commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, now known as the African Union.
It marks the culmination of African liberation movements and the collective aspiration for unity, liberation, and progress.
The day also serves to highlight Africa’s rich cultural heritage, resilience, and ongoing efforts towards peace, development, and cooperation.

Genesis
The roots of Africa Day can be traced back to the pan-African movement and the struggle for independence from colonial rule in the mid-20th century.
The Organization of African Unity (OAU) was established on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by 32 African nations. This marked a significant step towards African unity and cooperation.
Africa Day became a symbol of Pan-Africanism, highlighting the continent’s collective aspirations for freedom, unity, and progress.
The OAU was transformed into the African Union in 2002, but the date of May 25 continued to be observed as Africa Day.
While initially focused on political independence, Africa Day now encompasses a broader celebration of Africa’s cultural heritage, economic potential, and ongoing development efforts.
In essence, Africa Day is a celebration of Africa’s collective achievements and aspirations, commemorating both its historical struggle and its future potential.
“Africa has a lot of exciting facts, and these facts spark curiosity and pride in our continent.”
